In our article on The Evil Truth Behind Delusional Affirmations we discussed the emptiness and vanity behind trending New Age affirmations, and why Muslims prefer to supplicate to Allah to invoke His Divine Grace.

This article is about the life changing benefits of Supplication and how to compose your own supplication/prayer.

Bismillah (in the name of Allah).

1) Eternal Benefits of Supplication

Constant Good Feelings

Sometimes our present situation is what it is. If things can’t change immediately, at least we can feel better about the things. I'm talking about the difference between waking up in peace versus waking up in fear.

Allah's Grace feels like the removal of anxiety and it being replaced with security and a warm embrace. Grace feels like the lightening of your load and gifts of kindness and relief scattered throughout your day in the most beautiful ways that only Allah can provide.

In the Holy Qur'an Allah describes how He puts and affection, calmness, and anxiety into the hearts of the believers who strive:

Surah 3, The Family of Imran, Al Imran:

154. After the excitement of the distress He (Allah) sent down calm on a band of you overcome with slumber while another band was stirred to anxiety by their own feelings moved by wrong suspicions of God, suspicions due to ignorance.

Surah 8, The Spoils of War, Al-Anfal:

63. He it is Who strengthened you with His help and with the believers,

64. And He has put affection between their hearts. If you had spent all that is in the earth, you could not have produced that affection, but Allah has done it. Surely he is Mighty, Wise.

Alhamdulillah. Allah is the Most Kind, the Most Compassionate in so many ways.

Inspiration & confident decision making

Allah says in The Holy Qur’an:

51: It is not fitting for a man that Allah should speak to him except by inspiration, or from behind a veil, or by the sending of a Messenger to reveal, with Allah's permission, what Allah wills: for He is Most High, Most Wise.

- Surah 42 The Consultation

So, the first part of Supplication is to speak to Allah and ask Him for the answers, guidance, and inspiration that you need. The second part is to wait to be inspired with His guidance and solutions.

You'll probably receive guidance or "downloads" as some people say, over the next few days or weeks. When it's time to make a decision, you should think about it sincerely, then faithfully move forward with your decision.  Inshallah (God willing) whatever decision you make will be the right one.

Wisdom comes from asking for knowledge in order to hopefully act with soundness when the necessity for it occurs. And Wisdom from Allah is real intuition.

Meditating, especially during the Dawn, is an amazing time to sit in silence and think. Think about how you've been behaving, the outcomes you've been receiving, and the guidance you need to move forward.

Alhamdulillah, thank you Allah for allowing us to commune with You!

Accurate Perception

With Allah's gift of Wisdom comes accurate Perception and ongoing good judgment. Do we really think we can have accurate perception without the permission of Allah Almighty?

Here is an example of how weak we are in perception compared to Allah the Best of Planners - In the Qur'an Allah relates the story of when Prophet Moses was a baby, to save his life, his mother put him in a basket and sent him floating along the Nile. The basket, containing baby Moses, was picked up by the Wife of Pharaoh:

9. The wife of Pharaoh said (to Pharaoh) :  “(Here is) a joy of the eye, for me and for you : Slay him not. It may be that he will be of use to us, or we may adopt him as a son.” And they (Pharaoh and his wife) perceived not (what they were doing)!

- Surah 28 The Narration

How could Pharaoh have known that the child they drew from the Nile, and protected and raised until his adulthood, would be the very one whom God had sent to free the Children of Israel from slavery and bring an end to the power of Egypt?!

Allah’s grand plan to send a prophet to be raised by Egyptians, then to free their slaves, was unfathomable. Pharaoh considered himself a god and did not know that Allah is the Only God and the Best of Planners.

Allahuakbar! (God is the Greatest)

Clearly man is unable to compete with the King of the Universe, so we must supplicate to Him and ask him to pour out on us Wisdom and accurate Perception, if it's His Love we want.

Changes in Destiny

Can supplication change destiny?

Yes. That’s the whole point of supplication; to change our destiny, to positively influence our circumstances in this world and the world after death.

In Surah 86 At-Tariq - The Night Visitant, Allah speaks of man having no powers in the life after death:

5. Now let man but think from what he is created
6. He is created from a sperm-drop emitted,
7. Proceeding from between the backbone and the ribs:
8. Surely (Allah) is able to bring him back (to life)!
9. The Day that hidden things will be made manifest,
10. (Man) will have no power, and no helper.

So not having any powers in the next world,  implies that we DO have some kind of power in this world. Power for what? Power to change our destiny.

Subhanallah - Glory be to Allah.

In three consecutive surahs in the Holy Qur’an Allah talks about how our destiny is affected by our deeds and prayers.

Allah says in Qur’an Surah  64 At-Taghabun, The Manifestation of Losses (or The Mutual Loss and Gain):

11. No kind of calamity can occur, except by the leave of Allah: and if any one believes in Allah, (Allah) guides his heart (aright): for Allah knows all things.
13. Allah! There is no god but He: and on Allah, therefore, let the Believers put their trust.

2. ... Allah will provide a way out.

3. And He provides for him From (sources) he never Could imagine. And if any one puts his trust in Allah, sufficient is (Allah) For him.

- Surah 65 Talaq - The Divorce

These verses imply that putting your trust in Allah, by honestly declaring so in supplication, can be the difference between a calamity falling up on you, or Allah preventing calamity from falling upon you.

And in view of the ultimate Destiny, Allah promises us that our final abode will be with him in the Garden :

135. And those who, having done something to be ashamed of, or wronged their own souls, earnestly bring Allah to mind, and ask for forgiveness for their sins, - and who can forgive sins except Allah? - and are never obstinate in persisting knowingly in (the wrong) they have done.

136. For such the reward is forgiveness from their Lord, and Gardens with rivers flowing underneath, - an eternal dwelling: how excellent a recompense for those who work (and strive)!

- Surah 3 The Family of Imran

2) How to do your own supplication

When possible, you should supplicate after making Wudu. (The scholars recommend that we be in wudu as much as possible throughout the day).

Step 1 : Be sincere. Allah knows what is in your heart. The great great great grandson of Prophet Muhammad, Imam Ja’far As-Sadiq, has given us hadith from the Holy Prophet on prayer in the form of supplication. The Holy Prophet said:

"The person who prays is conversing with his Lord. So be embarrassed before One Who is cognizant of your secret, Who knows your conversation and what your conscience conceals."

- Lantern of the Path.

Step 2 : Show gratitude. Express your gratitude and weakness before Almighty Allah.

It is recommended to allow yourself to cry if you can. Tears and emotion intensify the sincerity of your prayer and soften your heart. What can be more sincere than shedding tears in the darkness of the night prostrating before Allah?

Thank Allah by his beautiful names and attributes. The Holy Prophet has said that supplication is adoration. So you should begin by adoring Allah and glorifying Him for everything. The more you learn about Allah, the more you'll realize how much there is to be grateful for.

Step 3 : Wish for peace for others. The Holy Prophet encourages us to include others in our supplications. Wish for peace and blessings for your family and the Prophet Muhammad and his family.

Step 4 : Express your needs to Allah and make your intentions for the sake of Allah. For example,

"Dear Lord, help me to create my own income so that I am free to worship you in the day and night, and to make my Salat on time".

Imam Jafar As- Sadiq gave us this advice about approaching Allah:

"Consider the One on whom you call, how you call on Him and why you call. Reflect about what you are asking and why you’re asking".

- Lantern of the Path.

Step 5 : When you feel inspired, journal after supplication so that you can re-read and reflect on your growth in the presence of Allah.

Visually seeing your growth and realizing when and where your prayers have been answered is an amazing experience!

If you don’t like writing because you feel like your thoughts are exposed, this is a good time to write in French (or any foreign language) to keep your work private. Basically you are scribing and encrypting your thoughts in a different tongue, and that's awesome.
