Qur'an Surah 113 - Falaq - The Dawn

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

1. Say: I seek refuge with the Lord of the Dawn
2. From the mischief of created things;
3. From the mischief of Darkness as it overspreads;
4. From the mischief of those who practice secret arts;
5. And from the mischief of the envious one as he practices envy.

By the Might of Allah, our world is enlightened through the rising of the Sun at Dawn. The Dawn is one of Allah’s Signs. The Sun rises every single day and our vision is brightened, yet we take it for granted.

But after you realize the Bounties and Mercies present in the atmosphere at Dawn, you’ll want to craft your morning routine around this miraculous and mystical time between Night and Day.

1) The Dawn is a Mighty Sign of Allah

 In Surahs throughout the Qur'an Allah tells us about His Signs such as the Sky, the Day, the Night, the Sun, the Moon, the Constellations, the birds that flap their wings, the seeds growing in the wombs, and the creatures that He has scattered throughout the Earth.

In Surah 74 of the Holy Qur'an Al-Muddaththir - The One Wrapped Up,  Allah describes His Signs to us :

32. Verily by the Moon,
33. And by the Night as it retreats,
34. And by the Dawn as it shines forth,
35. This is but one of the mighty (portents),
36. A warning to mankind.

In these ayats (Qur'an verses)  Allah swears by the Moon, the Night, and the Dawn that the Qur'an is a Mighty Portent - (a portent is a sign or warning that something, especially something momentous or calamitous, will happen in the future).  So everything that Allah points to in the Qur'an is Mighty and therefore worthy of deeper study.

In our article on The Wisdom of the Night we appreciated the significance of Night and how we were meant to spend our nights.  At Dawn another Gracious Mercy and Miracle from Allah is happening - the Night is changing into Day. So the Dawn is energetically different from the Night.

So where can we find deeper knowledge about mysticism of the Dawn? Alhamdulillah (all praise be to God), we can find gems of Wisdom and universal spiritual laws from the descendants of our Holy Prophet Muhammad.

Imam Jaʿfar ibn Muḥammad, also known as  Ja'far as-Sadiq (The Truthful), was an Imam, scholar and a 5th generation descendant of Prophet Muhammad.  In his book Lantern of the Path, the Imam says:

“Do not be distracted in seeking forgiveness at dawn, for at that time there is much yearning for those in devoted supplication.”

So what does yearning mean?

Yearning means the feeling of intense longing for something. At Dawn, the atmosphere is filled with vibrations of Vigilance and Awareness that soften your heart and make you yearn for happiness and nearness to Allah. It is the intense emotion and longing in your supplication that invokes Allah to turn to you.

Here is what Allah Almighty says about yearning in the Holy Qur'an:

56. Do no mischief on the earth, after it has been set in order, but call on Him with fear and yearning (in your hearts): for the Mercy of Allah is (always) near to those who do good. - Surah 7 Al Araf, The Heights.

2) The Power of Emotional Yearning at Dawn.

This idea that emotions create a powerful magnetic field of attraction around us is found in the works of many New Age thought leaders including Napoleon Hill, Claude Bristol, and Bob Proctor. For example Bob Proctor once said:

“Thoughts which are mixed with feeling or emotion constitute a magnetic force”.

A magnetic force that draws toward you that which you seek, and as Muslims we are always seeking for nearness to Allah.

So, in the quiet stillness of the Night right before the retreat of the stars, is a great time for reflection and supplication because our obvious weakness and reliance on Allah becomes evident and we're more likely to yearn and receive the object of what we yearn for.

Imam Ja’far As-Sadiq explains to us that when you understand your reliance on Allah (in ways you have no control over), your heart is softened with intense emotion and crying before Allah is normal and encouraged. (Seriously, keep some tissue nearby!)

3) What if it’s hard to wake up so early in the morning?

 In Surah 5 - Al Madiyah - The Table Spread, Allah encourages us to try …

35. O you who believe! be careful of (your duty to) Allah and seek means of nearness to Him and strive hard in His way that you may be successful.

Imam Ja’far Sadiq informs us that  - “too much sleep hardens the heart against supplication and humility.” - Lantern of the Path

So if your goal is to create a morning routine that starts you off in a state of awareness and nearness to Allah, have a good night routine that allows you to get enough sleep to wake up early. Ask Allah to make it easy for you.

Now that you understand the benefits of being awake at Dawn, you can intelligently craft your morning routine when the energies of vigilance and awareness are strongest for invoking Allah's Grace and Mercy.

Alhamdulillah!

4) Journal activity

The surahs in the Holy Qur'an are beautiful poems that are easy to read and understand. In this journal activity, you’ll find English and French extracts from Surah 89 of the Holy Qur'an - Al-Fajr - The Break of Day - L'aube.

Read the surah then answer the journal reflection questions.
